Project Preparation for Immediate and Rehabilitation Measures in the Water Sector to Tsunami Affected Areas in Galle District in Sri Lanka

Project Description:

Immediately after the Tsunami disaster in December 2004, KfW Development Bank sent a team of experts to Sri Lanka in order to identify rehabilitation projects in different sectors. IMS conducted a needs assessment, identified a rehabilitation project in the water sector and performed services for project preparation. In close cooperation with the national water authority, immediate measures for improvement of water supply, as well as implementation of a reconstruction and rehabilitation project in the Galle district in the South of Sri Lanka with an investment volume of EUR 22 million, have been proposed for financing. In addition the procurement of relief supplies, such as water tankers was organised.

The identified project proposal was committed for financing during a visit of the German minister for development cooperation in Sri Lanka. Project implementation for rehabilitation works was started accordingly with immediate effect.
